As a parent it can be disheartening to sit down to dinner to have your “picky eater” refuse their vegetables. Cooking takes a lot of work and you want nothing more than for your picky eater to grow up big and strong. Here are some ways we get our picky eaters excited about vegetables.
#1. Get Excited About Eating Veggies
If mom and dad are refusing to eat their veggies, you can bet that your picky eater is going to as well. Your kids will literally learn more from what’s caught then what’s taught. Make sure you’re setting a good example for your picky eater.
#2. Put a Reward System in Place
Yes you can threaten, punish, and yell all you want but that’s not going to make your picky eater want to eat their veggies. If your picky eater chooses to eat his or her veggies without a fight for 5 nights in a row, give them a night off from veggie eating.
#3. Let Them Choose Their Veggies
Does it really matter what KIND of veggies your picky eater is eating? As long as they are a vegetable and have the nutritional value, I wouldn’t make a big deal about it. Give your picky eater a choice of what vegetable they’d like with dinner. However, if they refuse to eat any vegetable, you might have to remove the “choice” option and what they get is what they get.
#5. Make the Vegetables Look Appealing
Whatever you do, try and make the vegetables look as appealing as possible. Throwing them on a plate and requesting your picky eater eat them could be asking for trouble. There are ways to make vegetables look appealing by making them into little faces or characters.
If you are losing a battle here, try just getting your picky eater to eat a few bites. I’d also suggest getting them involved in the process of growing vegetables to see how much of a process it is to get those veggies to grow.
