Once you become a parent, there’s no going back. After holding that child for the first time, it’s time to embrace your new role. However, you may have short periods of time to reminisce of what life was like before all of the diaper changes and early mornings. Here are things I wish I knew before becoming a parent.
#1. How to Change a Diaper
Okay, I can say before becming a parent I really never knew how to change a diaper. This is one of those things that a little practice goes a long way.
#2. How to Function on Little Sleep
No one really prepares you for how to function on such little sleep when you become a parent. Sure, you had those late nights of studying for a test whenever you were in college, but parenthood is something way different.
#3. How to Let Go
Humans are really bad at holding onto grudges, mistakes, and bad days. I wish I knew how to “let go” before coming a parent. Those Cheerios on the floor and long nights of getting up with baby are not going to be over any time soon (neither do I want them to be).
#4. Appreciated Going to the Bathroom Alone a Little More
This one is a bit farfetched, but I wish before becoming a parent I appreciated my bathroom time a little more. Now it’s nearly impossible to even wash my hands in the bathroom without the knock of little hands.
#5. How to be a Better Friend
Now that I’m a mom being a friend is a little harder. I have more things to think about than just myself. All of those petty things that bothered me before I had kids don’t even seem to bother me now. Perhaps the friend I am now with kids is the friend I should have been before having kids. I sure do appreciate the friendships I have now more than ever before.
